…. Less than 12 hours before we were scheduled to leave, we happened to discover the exquisite woodwork of Barry Biesanz, an American expatriate artist living in the hills above San José since 1971.  Some of his indescribable works of art – bowls and boxes crafted from rare woods harvested from fallen trees (he is a staunch supporter of forest preservation) happened to be in the hotel gift shop.

We took a chance and called the studio number and managed to get ourselves invited.  The astounding work was irresistible.  We bought numerous pieces, including a thin bowl made of rosewood with every grain lovingly burnished.

Not surprisingly, Mr. Biesanz is world famous.  He has framed letters of appreciation from Presidents Bush and Reagan. Queen Sofia of Spain is also one of his many admirers. His work is available in Dallas.
